Why Scooping Poop is Important

Exposure to disease

Animal waste can sometimes contain harmful microorganisms like E. Coli and Salmonella, disease-causing bacteria that can easily be transferred to humans. Children in particular are at risk in this instance.

Another complication from an unscooped yard can be the added risk of exposure to parvovirus, a common canine virus transferred from dog to dog through feces. While there are vaccines available to help prevent parvo it has a high mortality rate and all measures should be taken to avoid contact with the virus.

Parasites

Bacteria isn’t the only concern. Roundworm and hookworms are commonly found in the intestines of animals. Leaving feces in your yard can allow the parasites to transfer into the soil where they can infect you, your family and your pet. While not typically life threatening, parasites are no picnic, causing inflammation and irritation.

Toxicity

Dog waste is typically defined as non compostable. It does not break down the way some other manures do. Their feces contains toxins that can actually seep into your soil and make it difficult to maintain a beautiful and green yard.

Pests

Fecal matter attracts insects but did you know it will also draw in mice and rats? Large amounts of waste is likely to come with the additional headaches associated with an infestation.

As you can see, there’s no shortage of reasons to have your yard scooped!
